Warning: GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Products Have Been Recalled
GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate are used to replace amino acids in patients during hemodialysis (kidney dialysis). They are also the subjects of a Class I recall, the highest level of recall issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
According to the FDA, GranuFlo and NaturaLyte can contribute to elevated bicarbonate levels in patients who are undergoing hemodialysis. This can cause metabolic alkalosis, which is a significant risk factor associated with:
- Heart attacks
- Irregular heart rate
- Low blood pressure
- Low potassium in the blood
- Low oxygen in the blood
- Too much carbon dioxide in the blood
Massachusetts-based Fresenius Medical Care North America manufactures GranuFlo and NaturaLyte and uses them in the firm’s dialysis clinics. According to a New York Times report, Fresenius alerted its own physicians and medical directors about medical problems caused by GranuFlo and NaturaLyte but did not advise the public or FDA until the agency inquired about it.
