GranuFlo and Cardiac Arrhythmia / Heart Attacks

The Class I recall of Granuflo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate in March 2012 links these products to several medical problems in hemodialysis patients. These problems can be potentially deadly, including cardiac arrhythmia and heart attacks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says improper doses of GranuFlo or NaturaLyte can contribute to elevated bicarbonate levels in patients of kidney dialysis (hemodialysis). This may result in metabolic alkalosis, a pH imbalance caused by too much of an alkaline substance in the body.

Metabolic alkalosis is a significant risk factor associated with cardiac arrhythmia (or irregular heart rate) and cardiopulmonary arrest (or heart attack). Arrhythmias are caused by problems with the heart’s electrical conduction system. Abnormal levels of potassium, or hypokalemia (another risk of metabolic alkalosis), is a prime cause of cardiac arrhythmia.

Symptoms of cardiac arrhythmia may be non-existent, mild, severe or even life-threatening. They may include:

  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Chest pain.

Falls after fainting can lead to serious injury, particularly in older adults, who are likely to suffer broken hips or other bone fractures in falls.

Any abnormality of the heart is cause for concern and can ultimately lead to cardiac arrest, or heart attack. A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when blood flow to a portion of the heart is blocked and that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies.

Heart attacks can be instantly fatal, or they can weaken the heart in a manner that permanently reduces the heart attack survivor’s quality of life. Other heart attack victims recover and lead a normal lifestyle, but having had a heart attack once increases a person’s risk of an additional heart attack.

The New York Times has reported that medical products manufacturer Fresenius alerted its own physicians and medical directors about medical problems caused by GranuFlo and NaturaLyte but did not advise the public or FDA until the agency inquired about it.
