Do I Have a GranuFlo Claim?

If you are a kidney dialysis patient or the family member of a dialysis patient who has had an adverse reaction to a dialysis treatment during which GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate or NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate was used, you may have a valid legal claim for compensation.

GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate are used during hemodialysis (kidney dialysis). These products are the subjects of a Class I recall, which is the highest level of recall issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA says these products can be deadly if administered incorrectly. The New York Times reports that the manufacturer knew of their products’ safety hazards prior to the recall’s announcement.

The manufacturers of medical products have a legal responsibility to produce products that are safe and effective when used as intended. When consumers are harmed because a medical company has failed to meet this obligation, the legal team of Cohen and Malad, LLP, believes they should be held fully accountable.

Medical Problems Caused by GranuFlo and NaturaLyte

GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate are additives used during hemodialysis. This is process in which waste is removed from the blood of patients who suffer from acute and chronic renal (kidney) failure.

Because dialysis patients are prone to malnutrition, amino acids are added to the solution that patients receive during treatment. Amino acids, which must be taken in by the body, combine to form proteins.

Fresenius Medical Care North America of Waltham, Massachusetts, began manufacturing and distributing GranuFlo in January 2008. As the name suggests, GranuFlo is a dry amino acid, as opposed to the firm’s liquid product, NaturaLyte. GranuFlo is a powder, which makes it is easier to store and handle. This has made it a popular choice among dialysis clinics.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a Class I recall of GranuFlo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate in March 2012. The FDA says its Class I recalls are the most serious type of recall, and involve situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of the recalled product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

When GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are mixed in a patient’s dialysis solution incorrectly, they can contribute to elevated bicarbonate levels in the patient. Elevated bicarbonate levels can lead to metabolic alkalosis.

Metabolic alkalosis can cause tremors, light-headedness and nausea. If not treated quickly enough, it is a significant risk factor associated with cardiac arrhythmia, cardiopulmonary arrest, hypotension (low blood pressure), hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood), hypoxemia (low blood oxygen) and hypercapnia (increased carbon dioxide in the blood). Severe metabolic alkalosis that is left untreated will lead to convulsions, heart failure and coma.
