GranuFlo Side Effects

The March 2012 recall of Granuflo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate links these products to potentially deadly medical problems stemming from a high serum bicarbonate level in kidney patients undergoing hemodialysis.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says improper mixtures of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte can contribute to elevated bicarbonate levels in hemodialysis patients. This may lead to metabolic alkalosis, a pH imbalance in which the body has accumulated too much of an alkaline substance.

According to a New York Times report, Fresenius alerted its own physicians and medical directors about medical problems caused by GranuFlo and NaturaLyte but did not advise the public or FDA until the agency inquired about it.

Metabolic alkalosis is a significant risk factor associated with:

These are serious conditions. Cardiopulmonary arrest, which can be brought on by irregular heart beat (cardiac arrhythmia) or low potassium (hypokalemia) strikes suddenly and without warning. Low blood oxygen (hypoxemia or hypoxia) or too much carbon dioxide in the blood (hypercapnia) can lead to acute respiratory failure.

Severe metabolic alkalosis that is left untreated will lead to convulsions, heart failure and coma.

Dialysis patients should be constantly monitored by clinicians during their treatment for any indications of low blood pressure or other blood irregularities.
