GranuFlo and Low Blood Oxygen Levels

The March 2012 Class I recall of Granuflo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate links these products to potentially deadly medical problems in hemodialysis patients, including lowered levels of oxygen in the blood. This condition is called hypoxemia or hypoxia.

A Class I recall is the most serious type of recall. This type of recall involves situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of the recalled product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says.

According to the FDA, incorrect prescriptions of GranuFlo or NaturaLyte can contribute to elevated bicarbonate levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis (kidney dialysis). This can lead to metabolic alkalosis. This condition involves a pH imbalance that is caused by accumulating of too much of an alkaline substance in the body.

Metabolic alkalosis is a significant risk factor associated with hypoxemia, or low oxygen levels in the blood. Low oxygen can adversely affect the nervous system, lungs, muscles and heart.Initial symptoms of hypoxemia include:

In prolonged cases of hypoxemia, patients can suffer swelling of the brain, fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and, if not treated, coma and death.

The New York Times recently raised serious concerns when it reported that the manufacturer of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte dialsysis products, Fresenius, told its own physicians and medical directors about medical problems caused by GranuFlo and NaturaLyte but failed to inform the public or FDA until the agency inquired about it.
