GranuFlo and Low Blood Pressure

In March 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) told patients and physicians that the Fresenius-manufactured dialysis products Granuflo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate were the subject of a Class I recall. This is the most serious type of recall and only applies to situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of the recalled product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death, the FDA says.

In its recall notice, the FDA linked these products to potentially deadly medical problems, including low blood pressure (hypotension) in hemodialysis patients.

According to the FDA, improper mixtures of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte can lead to metabolic alkalosis, a pH imbalance in which the body has accumulated too much of an alkaline substance. This is due to these products contributing to elevated bicarbonate levels in hemodialysis (kidney dialysis) patients.

Metabolic alkalosis is a significant risk factor associated with hypotension, or low blood pressure. When blood pressure during and after each heartbeat is much lower than it should be, the heart, brain and other parts of the body do not get enough blood.

A shortage of blood can cause irregular heart beat or rhythm, which in turn can lead to heart attack.

Loss of blood in the brain due to low blood pressure can lead to unconsciousness or shock. Shock is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical treatment.

Falls from loss of consciousness, or fainting, can lead to serious injury, particularly in older adults, who are susceptible to broken hips and other bone fractures in falls.
