GranuFlo and Low Potassium

The March 2012 Class I recall of Granuflo Dry Acid Concentrate and NaturaLyte Liquid Acid Concentrate links these products to potentially deadly medical problems, including low potassium levels in the blood in hemodialysis patients. This is a condition called hypokalemia.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says improperly mixed GranuFlo or NaturaLyte can contribute to elevated bicarbonate levels in hemodialysis (kidney dialysis) patients. This can cause metabolic alkalosis, a pH imbalance in which the body has accumulated too much of an alkaline substance.

Metabolic alkalosis is a significant risk factor associated with hypokalemia, or low potassium levels in the blood. Potassium helps cells in the body, especially nerve and muscle cells, to function properly. A significant drop in the body’s potassium level can be life threatening.

Hypokalemia can lead to dangerous irregular heartbeat, which can in turn cause heart attack. It can cause:

  • Muscle weakness or spasms
  • Muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Paralysis, in severe cases, which may affect the lungs and be life threatening

The New York Times has reported that Fresenius, the GranuFlo and NaturaLyte manufacturer, alerted its own physicians and medical directors about medical problems caused by GranuFlo and NaturaLyte but did not advise the public or FDA until the agency inquired about it.
